What makes David Ashton’s jewellery different from other luxury jewellers?

Many of the great luxury houses earned their status in the early twentieth century when they were led by craftsmen dedicated to excellence; today, they are often managed by businessmen whose primary concern is the bottom line rather than the quality that built those reputations.

Clients choose David Ashton because every piece is designed and made directly by David in his London studio at the OXO Tower.

There are no intermediaries, no production teams, and no outsourcing — just a direct relationship between client and maker from first conversation to final piece.

His background in engineering and scientific instrument manufacture also brings a level of precision and attention to detail that sets the work apart.

His jewellery is recognised for its distinctive contemporary aesthetic, exceptional craftsmanship and practical wearability—pieces designed not simply to be admired, but to be worn and enjoyed every day.

What is your approach to bespoke commissions?

Every commission begins with a conversation.

David will discuss your ideas, offer guidance where needed, and help develop a design that feels right for you.

Once agreed, a deposit secures the commission and work begins in the workshop.

The process is simple, collaborative, and entirely personal.

While bespoke engagement rings are a popular choice, they are far from the only occasion worthy of a unique piece of jewellery. Whether celebrating a milestone birthday, anniversary, achievement, or personal journey, a bespoke creation can be designed to be as individual and meaningful as the moment it commemorates.

Do I work directly with David?

Yes.

This ensures a personal, consistent experience and allows every detail to be carefully considered.

The person who listens to your ideas is the same person who sketches, designs and handcrafts your jewellery.

For many clients, this direct relationship is one of the most valuable aspects of the experience.

Why is craftsmanship so important?

Fine jewellery should last for generations.

David’s work reflects a lifelong commitment to precision, durability and excellence in making.

His engineering background provides an unusually detailed understanding of structure, balance and wearability, allowing beautiful designs to be realised without compromising strength or comfort.

This attention to detail is evident in every stage of the making process.

Why do you use rub-over settings?

Rub-over settings are a signature part of David’s work.

Unlike traditional claws, the stone is fully enclosed in precious metal, creating a secure, smooth and contemporary finish that is ideal for everyday wear.

Are the diamonds and gemstones ethically sourced?

Yes.

David works with trusted suppliers who share his commitment to responsible sourcing and uses recycled precious metals wherever possible.

Only carefully selected natural diamonds and gemstones are chosen for his jewellery, ensuring exceptional beauty and individuality.

Why choose natural gemstones?

Natural gemstones possess a rarity and character that cannot be replicated.

Each stone carries its own unique geological history, formed over millions of years beneath the Earth’s surface.

The steep decline in lab-grown diamond prices over the last five years— exceeding 80%—has highlighted their limited ability to retain value compared with natural diamonds.

For many clients, this sense of authenticity and permanence is an important part of what makes fine jewellery so meaningful.

What recognition has David Ashton received?

David’s work has been recognised through prestigious awards and has appeared in leading publications including Vogue, ELLE and Marie Claire.

His jewellery has also been associated with renowned cultural institutions including the V&A and Tate.

Having been selected to exhibit at the highly respected Goldsmiths’ Company Fair a number of times, David has gone on to win every one of its most prestigious awards—an achievement that underscores his standing among Britain’s finest contemporary goldsmiths.

Such recognition reflects a reputation built on craftsmanship, originality and consistency over many years.

Where is David Ashton based?

David’s studio is located within London’s iconic OXO Tower on the South Bank.

The studio offers a calm and creative environment where clients can discuss ideas, view examples of craftsmanship and explore possibilities directly with the maker.
