Multicolour tourmaline & moonstone briolette necklace.
A combination of the finest moonstones, and tourmalines graduating in all colours from red, to pink, yellow green and blue.
A briolette is a style of gemstone cut – an elongated, faceted pear shape. The style was popular during the Victorian era. The earliest recorded history of briolettes dates back to the 1600’s It was Tavernier during his epic travels to India who returned to Europe with briolette cut gems.
Tourmaline’s colours have many different causes.
It’s generally agreed that traces of iron, and possibly titanium, induce green and blue colours. Manganese produces reds and pinks, and perhaps yellows. Some pink and yellow tourmalines might owe their hues to colour centres caused by radiation, which can be natural or laboratory-induced. The colours in this necklace have been carefully sorted to give a gentle graduation, red at the front to blue at the back. All the stones are beautifully faceted, and of the very finest quality. All the gemstones in this and all our jewellery are of natural origin, not lab-made.
The birthstone for October is tourmaline along with opal.
Tourmaline is also the gem of the eighth anniversary. Tourmaline becomes electrically charged when heated. Also when squeezed: it’s piezoelectric too.
Moonstone is a variety of the feldspar-group mineral orthoclase. During formation, orthoclase and albite separate into alternating layers. When light falls between these thin layers it is scattered producing the phenomenon called adularescence. Adularescence is the light that appears to billow across a gem. Throughout its long history, people have agreed on the qualities that the most highly favoured moonstones should display: a colourless, semitransparent to nearly transparent appearance without visible inclusions, and a vivid blue adularescence, known in the trade as blue sheen. The finest moonstone is a gem of glassy purity with a mobile, electric blue shimmer. These are the very finest quality moonstones.
