Orange sapphire, black diamond narrow ring.
A handmade 18ct yellow gold ring, with 15 orange natural sapphires and 15 black natural diamonds flush set, alternate evenly.
When pure, sapphire is colourless. Its colour is derived from transitional elements caught within the crystal structure. Iron & titanium makes blue. Orange by iron & chromium. Purple by vanadium. Yellow and green by iron only. Pink is caused by chromium only, becoming red with a greater concentration of chromium, then being called ruby. This ring can be made with any combination of colours as desired.
Until the late 1990s, there was not much demand for black diamonds. Large quantities or clouds of minute mineral inclusions such as graphite, pyrite, or hematite make the diamonds appear black. They provide a perfect contrast to the opulent orange sapphires. For a more traditional look, white diamonds would work well in place of the black.
True handmaking of jewellery is a dying art because it takes the most skill and time, yet it yields the highest quality of finish possible. It will result in a true heirloom piece that will last for generations. The difference is obvious to expert and discerning buyers, over time, the difference in durability and wearability becomes obvious to the owner, too. David Ashton jewellery is a bench made entirely by hand.
If you want a piece of jewellery that will last you a lifetime, you need something that was made by hand.
Traditional hand fabrication means forging each piece by hand, without the use of CAD software, wax models or casting or prefabricated pieces of any kind. It is the rarest type of jewellery construction nowadays. Taking a raw piece of cold-rolled metal wire, bar or sheet of precious metal, such as Platinum or Gold, and then through a process of cutting, hammering, shaping and annealing (heating), the metal is shaped into the desired design. It is this process of heating and annealing that hardens the metal, which the casting process skips, making handmade jewellery almost 50% harder than cast jewellery. This means that diamonds and gemstones are far less likely to fall out compared to cheaper cast settings. Porosity in cast jewellery weakens the basic structure of the piece, causing ring shanks to break, prongs to break off and galleries to crack. Thus, stones fall out.
Gemstones are not just a business for us but a lifetime passion. David and Nicola have honed their skills at the internationally recognised Gem-A and have passed the prestigious DGA, ensuring that every piece of jewellery is of the highest quality.
An extensive stock of beautiful diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds is available. We’ll gladly show you a selection and discuss and explain the technical and aesthetic considerations. The design and stone you choose will undoubtedly be unique and beautiful. Designed to suit your lifestyle, they will, after that, be an ongoing delight.
We make the bands solid without drilling through. This ensures their strength and prevents the build-up of lotions and soap, which dulls the look of stones and can cause skin irritation.
Sometimes described as pave, flush, or grain set, these rings are perfect for everyday wear. They are undoubtedly comfortable and substantial enough to last a lifetime.
