A rare variety of natural sapphire, known as colour-change, exhibits different colours in different light. Colour change sapphires are blue in outdoor light and purple under incandescent indoor light, or green to grey-green in daylight and pink to reddish-violet in incandescent light.

In his younger years, David trained as a scientific and medical instrument maker in Cambridge and, consequently as an aircraft engineer. Importantly, this gave him a unique perspective on precision manufacturing, which he then applied to jewellery making.
